Time for some ghost-busting. If you've found the Silph Scope in Celadon City, you can now safely enter the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, without worry of the ghosts kicking you toward the first floor. This Pokemon Tower page is part of the Walkthrough. If it any time you need an overview of the whole game and its chapters, head back to the Main Walkthrough Page.

Note: You can still climb the tower and face all of the Channelers and grab the items, but at a certain point you will be unable to pass without the Silph Scope.

The Silph Scope will turn the unknown specters you would otherwise encounter into, well... more tangible specters. Turns out those hostile apparitions are just Haunters and Gastlys. Since this is your first encounter with ghosts, here's an important tip: don't use Normal or Fighting-type attacks. They won't work. Instead, use whatever Psychic attacks you've got. All Ghosts are also dual Poison types, so Ground, Psychic and Bug attacks work especially well. Since you've got Dig, be sure to teach it to one of the Pokémon in your group. It's devastating against the Ghost enemies.

Getting through the tower is easy. It's really linear and there aren't really any tricks to getting through. Just fight all the trainers and continue on up.

As you approach the Pokémon Tower for the second time, you see your rival speaking with a young girl. She says that Team Rocket has been taking Marowaks to get the skulls off their heads, which explains why the Cubone is so frantic. It’s looking for its mother. Your rival tells the girl he’s going to go inside and look for the Cubone as the girl walks away. As you approach, your Rival asks if you want to come with him, and when you agree lets you lead the way.

Once you hit the third floor, you pull out your Silph Scope to reveal that the ghosts that had haunted you earlier are just Gastly and Haunter floating around the area.

Note: At this point, you won’t be able to pass unless you’ve gotten the Sliph Scope, so head to Route 8 toward Saffron City and get that if you haven’t yet.

A large ghost will block you and your Rival’s path, but taking out your Silph Scope, you reveal the ghost to be the restless spirit Cubone’s mother.

As the Cubone runs up to her, she fades away, and returns to a kind a gentle nature. Having seen its mother again, your Rival takes the Cubone home telling you that if you find a Mr. Fuji to send him there as well.

Heading southwest of the Marowak encounter, you’ll find a Rare Candy. After grabbing it head up to the seventh floor.

Get the Poké Flute

You’ll see a man standing in front of an alter briefly before you are ambushed by Jessie and James. They confront Fuji, saying they’re going to make him work for Team Rocket. As you approach the two challenge you to a battle.

Note: Jessie and James will fight you as a duo, so you’ll be fighting with two Pokémon instead of the usual one.

Weezing

After you have beaten Jessie and James they will run away and you can confront the missing Mr. Fuji. He says he didn’t even notice the fight, saying he was trying to calm the spirit of Marowak and now that it’s gone, says to meet him at his home.

As a thank you for rescuing him, he will give you an awesome prize: the Poké Flute, which you can use it to wake up the two sleeping Snorlax that block your way!

If you want, you can now head to Route 11 or Route 12 and wake up and capture the Snorlax. Remember though, there are only two Snorlax in the game. Be sure to catch at least one of them, as it's a powerful Normal-type.

While you’re pretty well equipped to take on some elements of Saffron City, other parts may prove a bit challenging, and as you may notice on your save screen, Sabrina is not the 5th badge you receive but rather the sixth, so let’s go ahead and go onto Route 12first and wake up that pesky Snorlax.
